The Seagaia Ocean Dome, was one of the world’s largest Polynesia-themed indoor waterpark, located in Miyazaki, Japan. The Ocean Dome, which was a part of the Sheraton Seagaia Resort, measured 300 metres in length and 100 metres in width, and was listed on the Guinness World Records.

Imagine a beach where the sky is always blue, it’s never too hot or cold, the water isn’t filled with salt and pollution, and the surf is always perfect – welcome to  Seagaia Ocean Dome, the world’s only indoor beach.

It opened in 1993, and visitor numbers peaked in 1995 at 1.25 million a year. Natural beach only 300 metres away. Depending on the season, entrance cost was ¥2600 per adult and ¥1600 for children (roughly 30 and 20 USD in 1995 respectively).

The Ocean Dome sported a fake flame-spitting volcano, artificial sand and the world’s largest retractable roof, which provided a permanently blue sky even on a rainy day. The air temperature was always held at around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and the water at around 28 (82 degrees Fahrenheit).

Every hour, the volcano erupts and the hi-tech wave machines start up, starting a few minutes of sanitized surfing.

The Ocean Dome was officially closed on October 1, 2007 as part of a renovation and partial re-branding of the resort. The roof of the structure was retractable in four sections.
